If you spot a vehicle that may not be taxed, here’s how to report it quickly and correctly: 1. Check the Tax StatusBefore reporting, you can check the vehicle’s tax status for free using the GOV.UK “Check Vehicle Tax” service. You’ll only need the registration number. 2. Report to DVLA (Fastest Method)The DVLA handles all untaxed vehicle reports. Your report is anonymous. - Online: Use the official GOV.UK “Report an Untaxed Vehicle” form
- Phone: Call the DVLA enforcement line on 0343 224 1999
Information to provide: - Registration number
- Make, model, and colour
- Exact location (street name, area, postcode)
3. When to Contact Local Services- South Staffordshire Council: If the vehicle appears abandoned (e.g., damaged, unmoved for weeks, missing parts).
- Staffordshire Police (101): Only if the vehicle is causing an obstruction or is in a dangerous condition.
Police do not deal with vehicles that are simply untaxed.
4. Important Notes- SORN Vehicles: A SORN vehicle must be kept on private land. If it is parked on a public road, report it to the DVLA as above.
- Private Land: Councils cannot usually remove untaxed vehicles from private land without permission from the landowner.
